


Race the Rainbow is a fun racing and skill development program of Windsurfing Canada
Race the Rainbow is designed as the next set of awards following completion
of Sail the Rainbow 6 levels.
Students who have completed the Red level of Sail the Rainbow can move on to more on
water activities and drills and fun races designed to build collaboration, concern for one
another as well as healthy competition.
The first level Bronze, is the Racing Readiness Level, designed to introduce students to
racing and the concepts of course racing, while continuing to build skills and water
safety knowledge.
Silver is for students who have progressed and are interested in trying different boards
and rigs in many conditions, and are working on various types of course racing.
Gold is performance level
Safety:
Always tests conditions and looks after own safety
Sails with a buddy
Can sail out and return to shore in most conditions
Can self rescue as needed
Understands rights of way,
Understands rounding the mark in right direction, when to yield to other sailors etc.
Gear
Knows something about different types of boards
Has tried different types and different sizes of sails (as available)
Understands wind conditions and how sail sizes relate to winds
Is interested in learning more about racing

Can make the mark in the right direction and round it.
Can do tacks and basic gybes in both directions
Can sail upwind using tacks
Can sail on downwind run, or close to
Knows windicators, reads wind ahead on the water
Easily sails figure 8 course in both directions, using tacks and gybes to round the marks
Silver
Can travel upwind, downwind,
Knows windicators
Turns are improving
Working on fast tack
Working on pivot gybe
Sails triangle course, knows how to get to starting line and is learning how to start race
Gold
Is beginning to make transition from sail steering to board steering
Is working on planning and board/sail control in stronger wind conditions
Is working on harnessing, knows use of footstraps, may be using them sometimes.
Is learning to harness in and release, use of harness lines
Demonstrates good sail control, ability to travel in all directions on the water
Can get to starting line
Understands how races are set up
Can sail I course
Enjoys racing
